Inbox full.

Funny conversation with my parents last night:

ME: So, yeah, I'm excited about all those things coming up that I'm going to be offering to other photographers soon.
DAD: Before long, the photography world will be all Scarlett Perfume, you know, like Mike Cologne.
ME: Uh, dad, it's spelled like your colon, but yes, pronounced like cologne.
MOM: Ooooh, there's an idea, you could come out with your own perfume line, darling!
ME: Oh, mom.

I'll never forget when I first got into photography and I discovered the work of a particular photographer. (No, it wasn't Mike Colon, but someone just as amazing.) I didn't realize at the time just how huge they were. All enthusiastic about the new career ahead of me, this person inspired me and by reading their blog I felt like I knew them like a friend. I naively sent off an email to them telling them how much I admired their work and asked a few small questions about how they got their work so amazing.

One day went by, no response.

Two days went by, no response.

How hard can it be to answer a quick email?

Three days went by... you get the drift.

They update their blog everyday, why can't they just write me back too?

A month later, yes, a WHOLE month later, I finally got a short email back with the generic thank you and quick answer to my questions.

Hmph, it took them a month to write, I mean come on, that's just rude. Are they so important that they can't make time for the little people just trying to learn a thing or two and start off their own fabulous photo business?

Fast forward to today. This is the part where I confess, I've completely become THAT person. I feel so guilty. I swore I never would. I swore if I ever got to the point where people looked up to my work that I would answer emails within a few days. But then the emails became more and more. Then my business took off and the editing piled up more and more. Then I dated a few guys and suddenly I had to make time in my schedule for someone other than my Mac computer. Then wedding season picked up and I was shooting back to back weddings. Then I found out my dad has cancer and might not be here in 6 months.

So yes, there is always something, and I'm so sorry I've become THAT person.

I'm currently looking at my inbox with emails from March that you have graciously wrote that I still haven't responded to. At the Love Affair workshop, they gave us the great tip about creating an "Action Needed" folder of things we need to do, so I started putting emails from other photographers in there that needed answers to their questions. Unfortunately, once it disappeared from my direct Inbox, I started to forget about the actions needed considering I could barely keep up with more and more piling up in my Inbox again.

So. Point of the story. If I haven't responded back to you, please don't hate me. It's nothing personal. I do love to hear from and help other photographers, but clients and family come first. You are all so amazing to write such sweet words about my work, and I'm glad I could help inspire you.

With all that said, I do love to help the photography community, God knows I am so thankful for all those He sent along my journey to help me along the way, and I will soon be making a big announcement about a mentoring opportunity I am opening up for all of you! Stay tuned to the blog....... I'll be revealing more soon!

Oh wow, Scarlett. This is almost too funny. I'm WAY behind on 1) your blog 2) Facebook 3) email 4) my blog. I've been thinking about you a lot over the last few weeks (and praying!) and wanting to write back, feeling guilty and sad that I haven't, and hoping I don't go another three weeks without "talking" with you! :) SO, I hereby decree you free from any guilt of not emailing people back. Because quite frankly, who has time?! ;) I love you, friend. Looking forward to catching up "soon". xoxo

Never feel guilty for not answering emails as fast as you wish you could. Your family, clients, and friends should always come first. A mentoring opportunity?!?!? Such fun!! Love you blog.

Sounds like perhaps you may be at a point in your career when a personal assistant may be a good idea? Sometimes we can't continue to grow and prosper without that support staff.

Things tend to get away sometimes, so don't feel bad at all! :) I am still in awe that you find the time to do all the things you're currently doing! :)

I want to tell you about 3 photographers that I emailed with a question. One did not answer... the other one answered back with a reply and conditions that were not helpful at all.... and the other replied back 3 months later and apologized for not answering my question and that I probably already got the answer (I still had not :) ).
All this forced me to KEEP LOOKING which was the best thing!! Because I did find a photographer who would take on another photographer as a "project" ( for lack of better words) and mentor this person for a few years! WOW Let me tell you. This photographer and I have just started working together a few months ago and I am so excited. He lived and worked in Los Angeles Cal in the fashion and wedding business for years.

Anyhow.... my point is this. Sometimes the fact that you are busy will be the best thing for those that you do not get to answer right away. It will force them to keep looking.
Yes I did have evil thoughts of those other photographers for a while till I found this guy. But I too have learned to understand.
:)

Your work is amazing and you shouldn't have apologize for not getting back to people asap. After all, you need to put YOU first, if you don't who else will? I'm super excited about the possibilities of this mentoring program you've got up your sleeve. Count me IN!

Praying for you and your family!!

oh, my goodness, gracious. i can so very much relate. hang in there....my inbox is looking the same way with no end in sight...(which is a great thing, but it's so hard because answering them becomes not just a task that you can check off once fully completed one weekend, but a lifestyle--a way of life). i'm not sure how to fit it all in--but there must be a way!!! and if that's all i had to do in a day is help people and answer emails, i'm all about that for sure!!!

Scarlett you are simply amazing! I am that curious photography person, which is how I found your site. I fell in love instantly. While I have many questions, I get much of what I need from the inspiration your site provides. Your passion for life and photography is contagious and inspiring. I can't wait to hear about your mentoring opportunity. I'm going to photography school in the fall and would love the opportunity to work with you in the future. I have been saying prayers for your family. Do not feel bad about unanswered emails. There is only so much time in the day and you need to take care of you first. That way you can be available for your family and the other people in your life. Take care of you and the rest will fall into place!
Sincerely,
Shannon Williams
