A's to your Q's!
Here is a video blog answering all your awesome questions you left to this entry recently. It took me about an hour to go through all the questions and answer them, so grab some popcorn and M&Ms and enjoy the video! (And sorry, it might take a few minutes to load since it's so long!) I made this in 2007 when I was first starting out, but I hope my answers somehow help bless your photography and business, and a big thanks to everyone who participated!
Here are a few resources that I mentioned in my answers that you should definitely check out:
Hi Scarlett, You are amazing! Thank you for answering all of those questions. What a HUGE blessing!!! It was nice to see and hear you. You are even more beautiful than your pics show. You are so sweet and I appreciate your generosity. Also, I love the fact that you aren't afraid to share your faith. Your business is blessed because of it. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thank you Scarlett! Your video was so informative and I really enjoyed it! Hearing and reading / seeing what all you've been doing in the past year has really inspired me. I'm excited about the upcoming year and hopefully I will be shooting the way I TRULY want (not just headshots) and be doing a lot more of what I truly love! Thank you for your openness and responses!
Girl, I can't believe how much stuff we do similar, LOL! I really didn't know about that Becker guy! I feel sooo in the dark sometimes but it's soooo refreshing to know that there are others right there with me! I think some of my clients are just very very very uncomfortable in front of the camera which stinks! You've met me, I'm the same goofball with my clients as I am with my friends but there have been some that will NOT losen up AT ALL.... Sigh, I'll stop whining now... Thank you so much for being open about your processing and workflow I'm so happy to know I'm not alone, I'm still trying to figure out lighting and if I want to buy a reflector etc etc. I just love you. I'm hoping to make it tonight but I do have to go up to GA but I'm hoping that we'll get home around 6 or so, but that all depends on how things go with the family. You know how it is if they make you mad you leave early, if you are having a good time then you end up staying longer than you should. But we have all our dogs at home so we really can't stay long, plus Wes knows I really want to go eventhough I don't have a cocktail dress that fits! hahaha!!! OK I'm rambling I'm going to finish watching your video now :D
This was awesome. You had told me that you were going to do a Q&A and Im so glad to see it. Your genuine answers and personality is amazing and I know that I definitely appreciate that all the much more than people who rub off questions and hide their techniques. Alot of what you do is soo similar to my processing- like post production and use of bridge, etc... Im so inspired by the fact that you are relatively new to photography and have had so much success! It makes me want to commit so much more of the time that I dont seem to have, to the thing I am most passionate about. Anyways, I wont go on forever =] Just want to again say thanks and that I love hearing about your techniques and seeing your work!
I just watched the entire video, downloaded it, (which did take forever lol) left it up on my computer and listed while I was working on some images. Even though I didn't ask any questions, it was AWESOME to her all your answers!
I am not sure if you would be up to something like this, but I would so totally pay to watch you talk and show more closer, how you do work with your images after you take them. If you ever do anything like that I would so completely be all about that! Let me know!
Melissa- Awww, thanks girl for the awesome feedback. I do have some exciting news coming up about about a mentorship program you can participate in with me. Stay tuned!
Thanks Scarlett! You should definitely do this video Q&A thing on your blog once/month or something! I love it. I've just started teaching myself to play around with Photoshop (of course, I have a VERY old version), and you're right - it's all about playing with the tools and learning what they can do for you!
I hate to plug another site here (honestly I have no affiliation to him!), but thebschoolblog.com has some really helpful videos demonstrating certain photography techniques. Short and sweet.
Erin- Yes, thebschoolblog.com is another awesome resource to learn stuff! Becker is amazing! He is awesome in how he gives his knowledge to the photography community like that! I just wish I had time to do more frequent videos like him. Maybe one day! :-)
The video was A-W-E-S-O-M-E! Thanks for sharing your vast photo knowledge! I live way up North in WI and the sunny photos just warm my day ;)
I had a question for you...I mainly by my equipment from B&H, but when looking for equipment I notice some places offer it for extremely cheap, How & why are they able to offer it for so much cheaper & where do you normally get your equipment? TIA Heidi
I am so excited to see this video but for some reason I can't get it to work! I wasn't sure if you took it down or reposted elsewhere? I LOVE your work you are too cute.
Hi Scarlett! I was just recently introduced to your blog and love your work! Thank you so much for posting the Q&A video! I've been a photographer for about a year, but am just getting into 'people' photography & second shooting weddings. Lighting has been one of my biggest questions, and obviously I'm not the only one who had questions about it! Your video answered so many questions for me, and I can't even tell you how much I appreciate it! Have a wonderful day! =)
Tracy- Glad I could be of help. Even though I feel like I need to update the video or make a new one b/c I continue to learn so much more about lighting each day. Like in the video I remember saying "SHOOT IN THE SHADE!" But now I've been experimenting with shooting in the harsh sun and kind of like that too. That's what I love about photography, always a new creative challenge!
Hi Scarlett, I'm been reading your blog and am amazed everyday at how open you are to your information. Bless ur heart. Was noticing that you mention you shot your first wedding in jpeg format and was quiet surprised. Leave it to you to try the unheard of. So you say you love it so i'm wondering what made you try it and why u will change to jpeg since raw has more flexibility and now since you are doing your shooting in jpeg will you will be using bridge as your editing choose? I'm still in misbelief..lol :)
I have been following u since way back in the day, I remember your first venture into photography and I am so inspired by you. Praise God for you and your family. I am so curious to know about you shooting in jpeg, do you use bridge still or photoshop? Also, I am an amateur but I shoot with Nikon d60, what equipment/accesories would you recommend? Also, any lens recommendations? Sorry for the questions, I would love if you did another video with more details for us newbies! You're aces Scarlett, can't wait to hear back from you.
Hey Motherload! I still edit JPEG in Bridge. My lens recommendation is above. And I don't have plans to do another video right now, BUT, I WILL be doing a live video chat on photographymentor.com on Nov 19, 2008 so be sure to join me and check that out!
Amy- Really, both Canon and Nikon are great! It's really like, PC vs. Mac. Bottomline, it's just a personal preference. Canon is what I've always used, and I love it, so I've stuck with it.
Gladys- You need to have the latest version of Quicktime. This video is so old from 2007 and I really need to make a more updated one, ha!
Thank you so much. SO it is the talent behind the camera that matters most. Have a wonderful week and again thank you so much. You are such an inspiration and I appreciate the time you take out of your life to help others. I just had to laugh when you mentioned so-delicious soy ice cream. I have a dairy allergy and my son has an anaphylactic reaction to nuts... this is the safest ice cream and we're addicted to it. It does not taste like sand, like so many of them do, lol. We love the chocolate velvet YUM!! You should try enjoy life chocolate chips...mmmmmmm...oh so off topic sorry ;) thank you
hi scarlett, i met you at joe and amy's wedding and just have a question. i know you have listed your favorite gear but if you were to buy a camera right now what would you pick. Also what does the D stand for in the title for ex 5D? Thanks so much for your time. Candice
Hi, Scarlet! I'm so amazed and awed by the beautiful photos in your blog and in your shoots. I heard about you from my sister-in-law, whose friend you shot for her wedding! Ever since then, I've been a total fan of your photography and I hope to learn a few tips and tricks for a wedding I'm doing (my brother's actually) later on this year. I love how you capture the candids and emotions on the faces of your subjects, that's what makes your pictures stand out among the many photographers! It's beautiful. Keep up the gorgeous work and God Bless!
I am considering changing up my albums, and I wondered what company you use? I like the combo of the large album and the parent album ( soo many colors!). Also, do you do your own designs or do you send those out?
You mentioned that you were still learning about flash but then you started talking about your off camera flash and accersories....lighting is something that I struggle with. You also talked about using flash in direct light. Just wondering if you could go into more depth about your lighting because it seems like you didnt go into that much. Also about shooting in the shade, dont you get some images picking up to much of the green??

What they said! ;)
Scarlett,
Thanks so much for this video and thanks for your honesty on everything.
Quick question on the 50mm 1.2. When you are in those low light situations how low are you willing to go on your fstop when DOF gets more shallow?
Thanks so much everyone! I'm sooo glad the video could be helpful to all of you! I hope I didn't ramble too much, but it was fun talking about it all.
Jared- I usually shoot wide open at 1.2 unless it's super bright outside, then I'll close it up accordingly.
Loved this! Thanks!
Thanks Jackie!

Hi Scarlett!
I just finished watching your Q&A! You go girl! Fantastic information. Thank you for taking the time to share your tips and tricks.
Oh, and my 5- year- old daughter, Megan, walked up at the end and saw you and said "Who is that? She looks really pretty." So cute!
Cheryl- LOL, so funny about your daughter. Tell her thank you. And so great that you could be blessed by the video!
The video was A-W-E-S-O-M-E! Thanks for sharing your vast photo knowledge! I live way up North in WI and the sunny photos just warm my day ;)

So glad you could benefit from the video Heidi. I have no idea why some places are cheaper. I use amazon.com, they seem to have the better deals.
I am so excited to see this video but for some reason I can't get it to work! I wasn't sure if you took it down or reposted elsewhere? I LOVE your work you are too cute.
Yeaa, I finally got it to work you just totally made my day thanks for the honesty and not being one of those secretive photographers!:)
LOL, my pleasure. I believe in sharing the wealth and paying it forward! Hope the video was a help!

May I ask why you prefer Canon over Nikon or others?
I have been pouring over photography blogs lately, trying to figure out which direction to go.
It seems that most portrait photographers as well as sports photographers are using Canon.
As a mom of five with a passion for taking their pics, I need to make the right (for me) choice.
I have been saving and now have the money to spend and I was going to go nikon d300, but now......now I'm so confused, lol.
SO..may I ask again why you went with canon?
Thank you so much for your time.
hi scarlett but for some reason the video that you made i cant see it its blank theres nothing on there where can push play or nothing.
Amy- Really, both Canon and Nikon are great! It's really like, PC vs. Mac. Bottomline, it's just a personal preference. Canon is what I've always used, and I love it, so I've stuck with it.

You should try enjoy life chocolate chips...mmmmmmm...oh so off topic sorry ;) thank you
My pleasure Amy!! I forgot about the soy ice cream. I haven't been sticking to the vegetarian thing as well these days. :-)
hi scarlett, i met you at joe and amy's wedding and just have a question. i know you have listed your favorite gear but if you were to buy a camera right now what would you pick. Also what does the D stand for in the title for ex 5D?
Thanks so much for your time.
Candice
Hi Candice! LOL, I've always wondered what the D stands for too. :-) A good beginning camera would be the 40D!
